SPEAK YOUR MIND: A Quick Guide To Beating Writer's Block

Updated: Jul 13, 2021

Chances are that if what you do involves any kind of writing, you'll eventually run into a case of "writer's block", the condition of which you are basically STUCK! Depending on the individual or project involved, the sensation of writer's block can pass quickly or even become permanent. To help alleviate this condition and get you on track to starting and finishing that script, book, website, magazine, blog, or whatever, we would like to offer you 3 very quick and simple lessons.

  • Speak your mind and don't hold your tongue. When you can't think of what to write, write whatever you're thinking. This might sound a bit silly, but much like the freestyle writing our teachers made us do in those black and white composition books when we were in elementary, writing down any and every single thing that comes to mind can be an absolute gold mine. Even if you do it for just 5 minutes a day, these random writing sessions won't just help in getting those creative muscles going, but they also have the potential of being an entirely new project on its own.

  • Whenever you can't write, read. I hate to say it, but if you want to write, you better learn to love to read. Seriously, the more you read the more ideas begin to flood your mind and the more inspired you become. It doesn't matter if you read something similar to what you are trying to write or something completely different, this habit will strengthen your vocabulary and your brain, making it that much easier to write.

  • Don't make it harder than it has to be. No matter how huge or complex the finished product is supposed to be, everything begins with a single word, sentence, paragraph, and so on. Do not overwhelm yourself. Just start somewhere, anywhere, and allow your project to grow from there. Remember that the writing process is not a straight line, so you can start from the middle, end, or wherever you want, and end up absolutely anywhere. The ONLY rule of writing is that you have to write!

Hopefully, you are now ready to write again and share your stories with the world. Like anything else, the more you do it, the easier it becomes. So, no more hesitation or procrastination, and get to it!
